I am currently studying Ayurvedic Medicine (AM), there is A LOT to say about AM, so lots of blog content coming your way, but if you have never heard of it, in a nutshell it is... a natural system of medicine, originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. The term Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Thus, Ayurveda translates to knowledge of life.


Part of following an Ayurvedic lifestyle is routine or I like to call them rituals, and these rituals are LIFE LONG, so it is a big commitment.


Some of these rituals can become part of you morning routines, taking care of yourself in the morning, is THE BEST way to start the day, I already have a my morning rituals, and I really enjoy it, and I get most of it done in 15 minutes, which I know, some of you are thinking 'that's an extra 15 minutes in bed'


Bear with me before you stop reading, because you know you don't have time for rituals...during my research I have found that there are Ayurvedic ritual lists of more than 20 things to do in a morning, ranging from nasal clearing to a 20 minute meditation, which is amazing, BUT even for me who loves a ritual an extra 2 hours to tick off the list of 20, would be hard work. Sooooooo what I have done for you is select the 6 which can be added with less than 5 minutes onto your already busy morning, some as you will read, do not take any time at all.


6 Easy Self-Care Steps to Kick start Your Day


1. Get up early. The first part of your ritual is simple: get up a bit earlier, so you have more time to start the day- now this one is easy if you have an early morning for work, if you are in the UAE I know this to be true, BUT just set your alarm for 5 minutes earlier, so that you have extra time to include one or more of the things on this list. 2. Boil the kettle so it’s ready for step 5 (that is not the main step here, so keep reading) step 2 is Freshen your mouth. Before you brush your teeth or drink anything, use an Ayurvedic tongue scraper (found on Amazon-avoid plastic ones) to rid yourself of ama (unwanted toxins) you can also use a tea spoon. Allow your tongue to be heavy in you mouth, and run the scrapper or the spoon along your tongue 5-7 times. Sounds gross I know, but you are getting rid of all the bacteria which has collected in your mouth during the night.


The science part-As we sleep we collect bacteria on our tongue, have a look and you will see it, while most of those bacteria are the “good kind” that foster a healthy environment in your mouth, other kinds can cause bad breath, tooth decay and gum infections.

3. Dry brushing. Two in one here as they go hand in hand. Dry brush before you shower, I start at my feet, and work my way up, make sure you use long brush stroke and go towards your heart. I have been doing this for over 15 years, and can vouch that this works! It start stubborn cellulite from forming, as well as all the other benefits below. And you get a gorgeous tingling sensation on your skin when you get into the shower. When you have brushed go to step 4.


The science part-dry brushing ahas a range of scientifically proven benefits, it exfoliates and unclogs pores, which is kind of the obvious bit, we are getting rid of those dead skin cells, which in turn means we are making our skin look more radiant. It also stimulates the central nervous system, the action of brushing towards the heart, just notice how you feel after you have brushed

4. Get in the shower and oil up! One of the most important things in Ayurveda is to use the cleansing power of water to freshen up every morning. Take a shower or a warm bath to rid yourself of stale energy. While you are in the shower, use a small amount of oil-I use a carrier oil and put in an essential oil, something like peppermint in the morning helps to wake you up, when applying the oil give yourself a massage, rub it in in large circle, using a bit of pressure where needed. Self massage is a whole step to itself, so for the sake of your time I have paired it here with the shower.


The science part- this one is also kind of obvious, as we have brushed all that dead skin away and released those toxins we need to wash them away, the water will also help to make you feel more refreshed and awake- following with your favourite oil to help lock in the moisture. 5. Drink lemon water- instead of coffee-don't shoot me here, you can have one cup a day if you follow a Ayuvedic life style, but this blog is not about a whole life style, so we won't get into that just yet, but try and drink hot water and lemon, BEFORE your morning coffee!


The science part-I don't even know what to include here as there are SO many benefits to drinking lemon water in the morning (and at any time actually) without going into all the details, I decided to list the ones which are most impressive:

  • Aids in digestion

  • Helps you to stay hydrated

  • A good source of Vitamin C

  • Provides a potassium boost

  • Prevents oxidation

6. Meditate-


Here are five easy steps to incorporate mindfulness into your drive:

  1. Take a few deep breaths. Take a minute or two to be aware of your body. ...

  2. Remove all noise. ...

  3. As you drive, tune in to your surroundings. ...

  4. Develop mindfulness rituals. ...

  5. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back.

PLEASE DO NOT CLOSE YOUR EYES- you can be in a mediative state without sitting on a meditation cushion chanting 'om'.


The science part-the benefits of meditation are endless, it can help with anxiety, stress and other mental health concerns, being mindful stops our mind from wandering and over thinking, so for us who are on a tight schedule in the morning, doing our mindfulness practice while in the car means you can add this into your morning routine with no added time at all as you will be driving to work anyway, so why not make the most of it.
